Thieves strike military community near San Diego

SAN DIEGO (WHDH) - When military families gathered for Memorial Day celebrations in San Diego crooks took the opportunity to break into their cars.

It’s not quite clear what the thieves wanted but families living in the military housing community of Bayview Hills woke up to find their cars had been rummaged through.

"For someone to do this like I said they picked the perfect time, we're relaxed and everyone in the neighborhood is relaxed and they put us on alert,” U.S. Navy sailor Herman Coleman said.

Neighbors say thieves rummaged through dozens of cars on eight streets, as if they were searching for something.

"Well military, they get prescription drugs, we're the ones that can get medicine easily on our base and if we're in the military we know how to handle guns to they think we have guns,” Coleman said.

Coleman says they took only his garage door opener and two knives but left his stereo and money behind.

"Kind of see this neighborhood as an easy target because of the lack of security presence also because they know that military folks have an income and as people who have an income they obviously have stuff that's worthy of stealing,” Dan Murphy, a Navy spouse, said.

Coleman says he won't let this ruin his celebration, but it's a reminder to always be on his guard.

"People target us in all facets of our lives. Whether they know we get paid the first and the 15th or we're going to be gone for 6-7 months at a time so regardless to say we're always going to be targeted abroad and at home,” he said.
