American climber survives 70-foot fall into crevasse

Posted: Updated:
NEPAL (WHDH) - An American climber came about as close as possible to death when he fell 70 feet down a crevasse while climbing in the Himalayas.

Scientist John All, 44, fell through a hole in the ice in Nepal and recorded his situation on his phone.

"I got trapped here instead, on this ledge, my arm I can't use," All said in the video.

Looking around, the options weren't good. Climbing out seemed nearly impossible. He may have survived the fall, but living to tell the tale was increasingly less likely.

After six hours, All said he managed to climb out of the hole using his ice ax.

"It was sort of like an inchworm. And every foot I moved forward," he said.

It reportedly took him three hours to reach his tent and call for help.

"I huddled under part of the sleeping bag as well as I could, shivering and slowly dying, waiting for the helicopters to arrive," he said.

All said rescue teams were finally able to reach him the next morning and flew him to a nearby hospital where he began his recovery from severe injuries.

"It was one of the most miserable, longest nights of my life," All said.

All is an experienced American climber, geography professor, and a director at the American Climber Science Program. He studies resource management and climate change, which was what brought him to the icy peaks of the Himalayas.

"I have to move forward and realize the good outweighs the risk. And that - it's worth it even though it is scary," All said.
