Fallen Boston firefighter honored

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Fallen Boston Firefighter Michael Kennedy received a posthumous honor Thursday.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay awarded Kennedy the "Big of the Year" award.

Firefighter Kennedy died in the Back Bay fire back in March.

He spent seven years in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, mentoring his "little" Alex.

Alex and Kennedy's mother say he was a great guy and his legacy will live on.

"Michael was larger than life. I truly believe that will continue," said Kathy Crosby-Bell, Kennedy's mother.

"Sometimes they're not really buddies and they actually are brothers because sometimes they come into your life and actually stay there," said Alex Beauzile, Kennedy's little brother. "Even his family considers me family as well."

Big Brothers Big Sisters also honored former Boston Mayor Tom Menino with the Excellence in Mentoring award.
