Child survives horrific school bus crash in Long Island

Posted: Updated:
COPIAGUE, NY (WHDH) - Two school buses crashed into each other in New York, and the incident was caught on camera.

Broken headlights still lined part of the street in Copaigue.

The crash terrified Sheyla Hernandez and her mom. They operate a day-care center out of their home, and their surveillance cameras captured the crash.

"My mom was going crazy, yelling," said Hernandez.

One of the buses, a mini-bus, overturned, and had a young girl on board.

Neighbor Miguel Lopez pulled her to safety.

"I see the back door and I struggle to open it. I open it up and I jumped in and I see the little kid, 7, 8, 9 years old," he said.

The girl seemed to be in shock and had a big gash on her forehead.

"She was bleeding and everything and I just carried her and put her outside," he said.

In the video, it appears the driver of the large bus, heading west, blew through a stop sign and slammed into the smaller bus, flipping it over.

Witnesses said the driver of the mini-bus was furious.

"One of them went to yell at the other driver. She was nervous. She was all over the place," said Hernandez.

The company Educational Transportation operated both buses. On Wednesday, officials repainted the stop lines at that intersection, but neighbors said they were still worried the stop sign was hard to see, because it is partly blocked by branches.
