Ortiz visits Children's Hospital to spread cheer

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Red Sox slugger David Ortiz wasn’t stealing bases Tuesday, but he was stealing hearts at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Big Papi was ready to sign autographs and bring smiles to the kids’ faces.

“I think David Ortiz is a great man to come into the hospital and do this for kids,” one boy named Jackson said.

Ortiz had several reasons for his visit Tuesday. He was helping to spread the word about a promotion from Dunkin Donuts where one dollar of each iced coffee sold on Wednesday, May 21, will get donated to the hospital.

“That is unbelievable, I know that's something that's going to raise a lot of money for these kids,” Ortiz said.

He also invited the kids to attend a Sox game.

“It was kind of cool, because I’ve never met a baseball player before and I like him,” a young boy named Tim said.

Ortiz said he enjoys spending time at the Children’s’ hospital.

“It's always good to come around and say hi to them and make sure they stay confident and keep the faith, that God is going to give them the opportunity to get better,” he said.
