MBTA driver says she sneezed, causing bus crash

Posted: Updated:
NEWTON, Mass. (WHDH) - In new paperwork, the MBTA bus driver involved in a weekend crash in Newton said she sneezed and that's what made her lose control.

In a 5-page affidavit filed in Newton District Court, Transit Police said that surveillance video shows the driver holding something in her hand, possibly a cellphone.

The driver, however, said that she closed her eyes and sneezed, the bus verring left and eventually crashing into the guardrail Sunday morning.

Cellphones are prohibited by Transit Police employees. The first offense is punishable with a 10-day suspension.

Officials added that it does not appear the driver had any text message or phone calls from 5:30 a.m. onwards.

Seven people, including the driver, were sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver is cited with three offenses. She also faces a criminal charge of lying to investigators. She is due in Newton District Court for the latter charge May 27.
