Suffolk honors Sam Berns, teen with progeria

BOSTON (WHDH) - Suffolk University honored Sam Berns with a touching tribute during the College of Arts and Sciences commencement ceremony on Sunday.

The university honored the teen with a posthumous honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Dr. Scott Berns, Sam's father, accepted the award on his son's behalf.

Sam, who was the subject of the HBO documentary "Life According to Sam," was said to inspire people with his courageous attitude.

"In your TEDx talk, you said 'no matter what I choose to become I believe I can change the world and as I'm striving to change the world I will be happy,'" said a speaker at the ceremony.

The 17-year-old boy from Foxborough battled progeria, a rare genetic condition that causes premature aging. He died earlier this year.
