WESTPORT, Mass. (WHDH) -
A Westport firefighter was recovering at home on Saturday just months after falling off a roof battling a fire.
Steven Lopes was one of two firefighters injured back in March battling flames at a house in town. Officials said it was a chimney fire. Both were taken to nearby hospitals. Lopes had serious injuries but the other firefighter was treated and released.
He is currently back at home with his family thanks to his co-workers who helped save his life.
"I was lucky that we have the paramedics. There were also firefighters from town that were there. My own guys worked on me, they took great care of me. They saved my life those guys," Lopes said.
The city is doing what they can to help Lopes recover. Since his insurance did not cover immediate medical costs, the town provided him the remainder of the money.
Officials plan on adding a catastrophic injury clause to their insurance policy this summer.
