The Boston Red Sox have placed third baseman Will Middlebrooks on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a fractured right index finger and recalled infielder Brock Holt from Triple-A Pawtucket.

The 25-year old Middlebrooks suffered the injury in Friday’s loss to Detroit when he attempted to field a line drive in the first inning. It’s his second trip to the DL this season after missing 19 games with a strained right calf in April.

Holt was up with the Red Sox earlier this season when Middlebrooks was on the DL. He hit .348 (8 for 23) during that stretch with four RBIs.

Middlebrooks was struggling at the plate with a .197 average with two homers and nine RBIs.

Holt is in the starting lineup for Saturday night’s game against the Tigers, playing third and batting ninth.
