Brentwood neighbors talk about losing home in explosion

Posted: Updated:

For hours Sue Maguire didn't believe the video of her house in Brentwood, N.H. exploding was real.

Her condo, connected to the home where an officer was shot and killed, was leveled by fire.

“I asked friends if it was real and they said ‘it was, but you're going to be ok,’” she said.

Sue and a neighbor heard arguing next door Monday afternoon; it wasn't the first time she had heard Michael Nolan yell at his father.

“Michael was a bit eccentric and reclusive and a lot of people didn’t even know he lived there. He was quiet except for the times he was yelling at his father,” she said.

Then a police officer, Steve Arkell, showed up to help.

“Michael opened fire on the police officer and I don't think he had a chance to exchange fire,” she said.

Minutes later the home caught on fire.

“I thought to myself oh my goodness, my house is on fire, please don't let my house burn down, I have two cats in there,” she said.

Sue and her husband Jim lost almost everything, including Sue’s wedding band from 37 years of marriage.

With the help of family and friends they will move forward.

The couple calls Officer Arkell a hero.

“He went in there thinking he was going to calm down a situation between a father and son. God rest his soul, I hope his family realizes he is a true hero for this community,” Jim Maguire said.

Friends and family have setup an online fundraiser for the Maguires that you can find here.
