MBTA fares to increase by 6 percent this summer

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has voted in favor of raising MBTA fares Wednesday.

Fares for bus and subway rides will increase by five cents for students and seniors and 10 cents for everyone else.

Monthly link passes and commuter rail passes will also increase by $5.

The move was first announced in March as a way to balance the 2015 budget. The fare hikes would take effect July 1.
