Diver attacked underwater in Hawaii

Posted: Updated:
HONOLULU (WHDH) - A team of divers surveying a coral reef off the coast of Hawaii was attacked while 50 feet underwater and the whole thing was caught on camera.

Rene Umberger said she could have died when another person ripped out her breathing tube.

“An inexperienced diver would likely panic, either panic from the stress of the situation and shoot for the surface. They may panic because their air source is missing and maybe they cannot find it. Those incidents often leads to death,” Umberger said.

Umberger, a 53-year-old with 10,000 dives under her belt, said she was able to get her regulator back in and breathe again.

“I think this man needs to be arrested immediately for attempted murder,” she said.

After she was breathing again video shows the man make a gesture which Umberger took as a threat.

“I honestly thought he was coming back for a second attack,” she said.

Police are investigating the incident, and Umberger said she believes she knows who the suspect is.
