Neighbors said they couldn’t believe it when their community became a crime scene after a police officer was killed and a house exploded.

Just after 4 p.m. Monday afternoon, police were called for reports of a 47-year-old man arguing with his father.

An officer arrived and escorted the older man out of his house then went back in.

“The cop went back in the house and that’s when we heard a bunch of gunshots,” Susan Hughes said.

Officials said that was when officer Steve Arkell was killed.

Neighbors were ordered to go into their basements to seek cover, then were evacuated one by one.

“Police were running around the development with weapons drawn then ultimately they took a Humvee to all the houses in our section and evacuated us,” Steve Buco said.

Then, the house exploded. Police believe the 47-year-old man was killed in the explosion.

"I’ve never seen so many police, SWAT teams, fire trucks, ambulances in my life,” Debra Pizon said.
