Community mourns fallen Brentwood officer

BRENTWOOD, N.H. (WHDH) - The Brentwood community prepared for a press conference on the death of a police officer.

The community planned a candlelight vigil for Tuesday evening to honor the fallen officer.

Steve Arkell was killed Monday afternoon when he reportedly tried to calm down an argument between a father and son.

"It's sad. I was praying that he was going to be okay," said Susan Currier, who lives nearby.

People left flowers near the scene.

"His life was on the line and...he was there to protect the whole community, the rest of this town," Currier said.

Arkell, 48, was shot on Mill Pond Road. Investigators said they believe he was shot by Michael Nolan, 47.

“The best information we have at this time is that Officer Arkell was fatally shot as he entered the home,” New Hampshire Attorney Joseph Foster said.

Another officer ran in to help, but the attorney general said gunfire forced him out.

After the shooting, the house burst into flames and a massive explosion blew the front off the house. It was leveled within an hour.

New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan ordered flags to be flown at half-mast in his honor.

“When an officer is killed in the line of duty it strikes at the very fabric of our society and I know all Granite Staters join with me tonight in sorrow for the loss of Officer Arkell. I know that all Granite Staters know that they owe Officer Arkell and his family the deepest gratitude for his service his sacrifice and has bravery, and I know that all Granite Staters join me in offering their condolences,” N.H. Gov. Maggie Hassan said.

Nolan was believed to have been killed in the explosion inside his father's home.

Arkell was a part-time officer with two daughters. He had been on the force serving his community for 15 years.

A news conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
