PLAINVILLE, Mass. (WHDH) - One person died and five were seriously injured after a six-car crash on Interstate 495 near Plainville Sunday night.

State police confirmed that the fatality was a result of the crash on the southbound side of the highway near exit 14.

Victims of the violent crash said a wrong-way driver slammed into five different cars along 495.

“We saw headlights coming toward us that struck a vehicle that was traveling southbound as well as us. We saw that impact and then the car came right into the front of our vehicle,” Nancy Hanley said.

State troopers said the driver was traveling north in the southbound lanes on Sunday night.

Many of the cars that were involved were totaled, but drivers said they are counting their blessings today.

“Absolutely thankful that I drive a car that has a five-star crash test rating and very grateful that it stood up to a collision like that,” Hanley said.

State Police said the driver who was killed was 39-year-old Randolph man, witnesses say he was the one driving the wrong direction.
