Colo. woman survives in trapped car for 5 days

Posted: Updated:
UNDATED (NBC) - The parents of a Colorado woman who had been trapped in a wrecked car for five days without food or water are speaking out about their daughter's survival.

Connie and Glen Morgan have been asking how their daughter, Kristin Hopkins, is still alive after she was found on Sunday in a wrecked car upside down in a ravine.

"When we got the call as to where she was, we were thinking we had no idea why she was there-no idea whatsoever," Glen said.

Hopkins lives with her parents and works two jobs. When she didn't come home for some time, Glen and Connie began looking for her.

When word came on Sunday that Hopkins had been found alive, her parents say they knew her survival instincts kicked in, including messages asking for help that she wrote on an umbrella.

"She had a plan and that plan basically was, I've got to stay alive and how do I do that. That's where the umbrella came into play and it's just amazing that she was able to think of something like that," Glen said.

As for the couple who found their daughter, the Morgans say they can't wait to meet them and be able to say thank you to them in person.

Hopkins had to have both legs amputated. She has another surgery on Friday.
