18 arrested after off-campus RI party

Posted: Updated:
NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WHDH) - 18 University of Rhode Island students are under arrest after an out of control party got bloody for some.

Some of the students posted pictures on social media, including one with blood covering the front of his shirt. It was taken apparently after the party-goer was hit with beer bottles.

Around 1,000 students gathered at the off-campus party, throwing bottles and mailboxes, along with climbing on rooftops.

The students face disciplinary hearings this week and the university says they could be expelled.

Neighbors say that off-campus partying has been out of control for years and don't think it can be controlled. The town has enacted at least 12 ordinances aimed directly at student partying, but the problem still persists.

"It's unacceptable. It's intolerable. The university is not going to tolerate it and we're going to take action against individuals who we're able to identify who violating policy or laws," said URI Dean of Student Affairs Thomas Dougan.
