Trooper accused of driving drunk released on bail

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (WHDH) - A state trooper who was accused of driving drunk and crashing his car in North Andover was arraigned in Lawrence Tuesday.

The judge released Dale Jenkins on $20,000 bail.

Jenkins was relieved of duty after he was allegedly driving under the influence and crashed a car early Saturday morning.

He was charged with operating under the influence and carrying a firearm while intoxicated after the crash on Route 114 at Sharpners Pond Road in North Andover.

Authorities found a personally owned handgun in the car.

Jenkins was off-duty at the time of the incident and his passenger, an adult male, suffered severe injuries in the crash, which occurred shortly before 1 a.m.
Police charged Jenkins following an investigation. At the time of the crash, he was operating a personally-owned car and carrying a personally-owned handgun, not his department-issued weapon.

The vehicle was mangled after the accident. No other vehicles were involved.
In addition to immediately being relieved of duty, Jenkins' license to carry firearms was suspended. The State Police will conduct an administrative hearing next week to determine Jenkins' duty status for the duration of criminal proceedings against him.
The crash investigation is under the jurisdiction of the North Andover Police Department. This morning, Colonel Timothy P. Alben, superintendent of the State Police, offered North Andover Police and the Essex County District Attorney any assistance they may require of the State Police. Colonel Alben further stated that his thoughts and concern, and those of his department, were first and foremost today with the passenger in the car who was seriously injured and remains in a Boston hospital.
Jenkins was treated for injuries at Lowell General Hospital and was released into the custody of the North Andover Police Department. He is expected to be arraigned next week.
