5-year-old Fitchburg boy laid to rest

Posted: Updated:
FITCHBURG, Mass. (WHDH) - The 5-year-old Fitchburg boy who was missing for months before his body was found by the side of a highway was laid to rest Saturday.

The father of Jeremiah Oliver apologized at his funeral for not protecting him.

Jose Oliver gave a tearful eulogy Saturday for his son Jeremiah Oliver at the Rollstone Congregational Church in Fitchburg.

"I wish this was a celebration of the return of Jeremiah and not the death of Jeremiah," Oliver said

He spoke of a dream he had, where Jeremiah told him he was now safe in heaven, and ended a sad service with an apology.

Addressing his son's small white coffin, Oliver asked the boy for forgiveness, saying "I am sorry, as a father and as a man, that I could not be there to protect you."

A burial followed at Hope Cemetery in Worcester, where people saluted the boy that came to mean so much to the community.

Jeremiah was last seen in September but not reported missing until December. His remains were found last month.
His mother and her boyfriend have been charged in connection with his disappearance, which helped spur major changes in the state child welfare agency.

According to his obituary, Jeremiah liked Spiderman, playing outdoors, and "souped-up" cars, and wanted to be a police officer when he grew up.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
