Mini-horse rescued from mini-hole in Chatham

CHATHAM, Mass. (WHDH) - There was no horsing around during this rescue in South Chatham.

Firefighters responded to a home Friday morning after Norton, a 15-year-old mini-horse, fell into a sinkhole.

“I said ‘you're in a hole.’ And I started to hyperventilate and shake and my heart was thumping,” Brenda Nickerson, Norton's owner said.

Nickerson couldn't find the number for Animal Control, so she called the fire department.

“Its interesting its something that doesn't happen often,” Nick Ruggiere, a Chatham firefighter, said.

Firefighters were able to dig a ramp for the horse so it could walk out of the four feet deep hole.

“We got the bridle on the horse and we took a couple scoops of dirt to fill around his feet a little and able to walk him right out,” Ruggiere said.

The sinkhole was likely caused by an old septic system and Nickerson is working to fill it in.
