Patriot Julian Edelman in charity ride for Best Buddies

BOSTON (WHDH) - It may be off-season for the NFL, but Patriots receiver Julian Edelman isn't taking time off.

Instead, he is co-captain of Team Tom Brady for a charity ride for Best Buddies, along with 7News' Kayna Whitworth and Adam Williams.

Edelman has put on a different uniform with slightly modified pads.

"I think these pants are going to be awesome to wear all the time," he said.

The charity ride will raise money for the Best Buddies program to help those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Edelman very much considers it a race, and is in it to win it.

"It's a full on race," he said, adding that he thought his biggest competition will be Coach Belichick.

Ahead of the race, all three needed a bike fit from Cannondale in Cambridge.

Putting the pedal to the metal proved a bit more challenging as Edelman figured out how to clip into the pedals. He also planned out his pre-race meals:

"A whole bunch of smoothies with protein and carbs," he said.

Edelman joked around, but he lent his name to a worthy cause, one he has been involved for years and hopes others will take up.

"If I can help one more person get involved, my job has been done," Edelman said.

Those interested can donate on pages set up for Adam and Kayna.
