Ariz. store owner fights back against thief

Posted: Updated:
TUSCON, Ariz. (NBC) -

A would-be robber got more than he bargained for when a store owner fought back.

The owner is talking about the counter attack and explaining why he was able to take on the suspect.

His name is Maen Mdanat but neighbors call him the convenience store man, a super-hero in the fight against crime.

It was 1:30 Saturday morning when a would-be thief enters his store asking his clerk for cash.

"I could hear him talking, saying money, and my clerk was here,"Mdanat said.

Recognizing trouble on his tv monitors Mdanat comes out of his office, shows the suspect the door and is sucker punched.

Little did the thug know, Mdanat trained with an Army Special Forces Unit.

"He was comfortable walking in, showing his muscle, like 'I can do whatever I want.' That's basically the message he gave me when he walked in, but I changed his idea when he walked out," he said.

Peter Norback is an advocate for the less fortunate, in the "miles neighborhood".

In the five years Mdanat has owned the Axis Food Mart he says crime has dropped and a sense of community has bloomed.

"People come up, don't always have the change, he just lets them slide. No convenience store does that,” Norback said.

In the end, the suspect in the two-minute video picks himself up.

"I made sure he's okay. I asked him, you okay? I'm still human, I have kids and a wife,” Mdanat said.

The clerk who was working at the time said he isn’t worried about retaliation.
