Former Celtic weighs in on Donald Sterling ban

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Players, owners and coaches around the league teaming up to show their support for the Clippers and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver's decision to ban Donald Sterling.

Celtics legend Cedric Maxwell echoed the feelings of many current and former NBA players after hearing Donald Sterling’s recorded conversation.

"If you start hearing anything like that out of somebody's mouth, especially the owner of an NBA team about black players, you are going to be offended,” Maxwell said.

Maxwell applauds the commissioner’s decision to bring the hammer down on Sterling.

"Really the cherry on the sundae to me was the fact he is recommending that Donald Sterling sell his franchise,” he said.

Maxwell, who played for the Clippers in the 80's under Sterling, said he was surprised by the owner’s racist rant because it wasn’t something he experienced while playing for L.A.

Regardless, Maxwell said he believes the commissioner’s actions could have a ripple effect.

"It’s a new day, the new commissioner has made a bold, decisive statement which has changed the landscape of NBA basketball, and really maybe sports in general, when you start talking about guys who own teams,” Maxwell said.

The Boston Celtics owners are weighing in on the situation a statement reads in part "The Celtics stand for inclusion and equality, and we are proud to be a part of a league that shares the same values."
