Fitchburg woman looking for answer after dog put down

Posted: Updated:
FITCHBURG, Mass. (WHDH) - A Fitchburg woman is looking for answers after her dog escaped from her home Easter Sunday and was put down by animal control.

Maghan Moynihan says Capone, a pit bull mix, ran out of the house without his collar and within 48 hours, was dead.

"I called [the animal control officer] Sunday morning. I said, 'Susie I know you are going to be so mad at me...but Capone got out again. And I didn't hear back from her until Tuesday morning," Moynihan said.

The officer asked Maghan to come in and do an identification on Tuesday.

"It was horrible. He was freezing cold. He was on a table. They had a blanket over him. They pulled it down to show us the face. We all lost it in there."

The owners now want to know who was responsible for the decision to put the dog down. Moynihan's friends say that the dog was never aggressive.

"They first said he had bit another dog in the kennel. Now they're saying completely that story is out the window," Moynihan said.

Moynihan believes that the Fitchburg animal control officer was out sick the day Capone was put down. She wants to know who made the decision and wants that person fired.

Fitchburg police and the State Department of Agricultural Resources are investigating.
