Erin Deveney named DCF interim commissioner

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Erin Deveney has been named interim commissioner of the Department of Children and Families after Olga Roche handed in her resignation Tuesday.

Deveney was named to the position by Gov. Deval Patrick. She was called an experienced manager and a public servant.

"I will assure that the agency's top priority continues to be ensuring and protecting the children of the Commonwealth," Deveney said in a press conference.

She has been working at the DCF for about 30 days following a stint at the Department of Motor Vehicles as the Chief of Staff, where she was employed starting in 2009.

The governor is asking all DCF staff members to give Deveney their full support. He spoke of the importance of the necessary transition and appointing a new interim head.

Deveney has promised upgrades in technology to help accomplish that goal.

The search for a permanent head of DCF is underway. Deveney could be a candidate.

Roche's resignation follows the recent deaths of two babies and just weeks after the body of five-year-old Jeremiah Oliver was found.
