MARSHFIELD, Mass. (WHDH) -
Ryan Knapp was doing laundry Sunday afternoon when he stopped and saw something suspicious in the road.
“Electrical tape, a 9-volt battery on the side, a magnet on the bottom. When I kicked it over the battery popped out of the side then I saw the magnet,” he said.
What he didn’t know was that it didn’t just look suspicious, it was a pipe bomb.
“I kicked it and I guess I’m lucky to be alive,” he said.
Police believe the dangerous device fell off a car that was driving down Ocean Street.
“It would have caused serious injury if not death to several people in the immediate area,” Marshfield Police Chief Phillip Tavares said.
Knapp said he’s glad it was him that found the device and called police
“I’m glad I found it, and I’m glad I said something about it because I have children and I know people in this neighborhood have children. If I child picked it up that would have been just terrible,” he said.
Officials are now offering a $5,000 reward for any information that could lead to an arrest. The Marshfield Police Department can be reached at (781) 834-6655.
