Spring can be a fickle time of year weather-wise across New England, and this upcoming pattern shows the cool, and sometimes unsettled pattern we can fall into.
Let’s start with today. Rain moves in across area this morning, and lingers as patchy light rain and drizzle early this afternoon. While we don’t see the rain come down in buckets all day, it’ll be enough to wet the ground and keep us on the cool and raw side through the rest of the day. With winds out of the east, temps hold into the mid to upper 40s this afternoon. There may be a few hours of drizzle/rain-free time late this afternoon and early this evening, but it’s not exactly a terrific start to the weekend. In terms of rain amounts, we’ll be close to 0.10″ across eastern Mass and about 0.25″ west of 495.
After some lulls late this afternoon and early this evening, a renewed batch of showers, even a few embedded rumbles of thunder, move in late evening and overnight tonight with another batch of instability that has to work through. With this batch, the air mass overall is cold enough that wet snow may mix in across the higher terrain of Southwest New Hampshire, Southern VT and the Berkshires. Yikes!
The overnight showers taper by Sunday morning, however, the low level moisture is tough to completely scour out. That means a lot of leftover clouds, a patch of drizzle or shower is still possible. We’ll get some dry hours in the mix too, and wind winds turning north to northwest, temps run in the 50s instead of the 40s. So… at least it’s a bit better.
Monday and Tuesday feature dry weather from start to finish, but still on the cooler side. Mid to upper 50s Monday and near 50 Tuesday.
Wednesday and Thursday feature potential washout days as cool onshore winds and rain move back in thanks to an approaching low from our southwest. With a big high to our north, the pattern is slow to move, and that’s why these onshore wind days and rain events can be so persistent and carryover multiple days.
By Friday, we should be able to get that low to our northeast, allowing for land breezes and an attempt at drier weather to end the week and go into the weekend. The issue late in the week, and perhaps next weekend, is the fact that the air aloft is awfully cold looking, and that can create instability with the day time heating and trigger scattered afternoon showers to develop.
