Worcester home shot at, pipe bomb found

Posted: Updated:
WORCESTER, Mass. (WHDH) - The State Police Bomb Squad responded to a home on Barclay Street in Worcester Friday to investigate a suspicious object.

"It was a pipe bomb resting on top of the spare tire with a fuse sticking out of it," said Kerry Hazelhurst of the Worcester Police Department.

Bomb squad techs used a water cannon to disarm the device.

"They rendered the pipe bomb safe and was able to confirm it was an active pipe bomb," said Hazelhurst.

Police evacuated the area while they worked.

"It's incredibly scary to think someone would put other people that are innocent in danger for whatever reason," said Andrew Lambert, a neighbor.

No one was injured, and investigators said this was the second time they were called to the house on Friday.

"This particular address, we responded to earlier this morning at 2:40 a.m. for shots fired," said Hazelhurst.

Bullet holes riddled windows in the front of the home where Steven Bowhile lives with his wife and three children. Bowhile said he couldn't imagine why someone would target his family.

"I have no issue with anybody, at all...zero," Bowhile said.

He said he didn't realize his house had been shot up until police showed up just before three in the morning. Hours later, he discovered the bomb.

He said it looked like someone tried to light what looked like a fuse and he was grateful no one was hurt.

Police said they would treat both the incidents as separate investigations.
