SALEM, N.H. (WHDH) -

Police in Salem were skeptical about a story from a father who said a man tried to run away with with his 8-month-old baby in a stroller.

After additional investigations, police determined the story to be a hoax.

The incident reportedly happened near a wooded area in Salem. The father said he was taking a walk with his baby just before 7 p.m. Thursday.

According to the father, a man suddenly appeared and grabbed his baby’s stroller and ran away. The father said he caught up with the suspect when the suspect stopped to get the baby out of the stroller and that the suspect then ran away.

Continued police investigations determined the father made up the story, and they wanted to assure everyone that the neighborhood was, in fact, safe.

Police said the father could be charged with filing a false report.

There was no word on why the dad made up the story.
