Tree crashes down on Billerica home

Posted: Updated:
BILLERICA, Mass. (WHDH) - Heavy winds whipped up trouble in Billerica Thursday, causing a tree to topple down on a home and a car.

The Billerica family bought the house a year ago and bought the car four months ago.

Fire officials said gusts knocked the tree onto the home and branches crashed into a room where the family's 22-year-old daughter was sleeping. No injuries were reported.

The tree came crashing down at 9 a.m. while the Harvey family was inside.

"It was a tremendous bang. I noticed there was a limb in, over the front doorway in the house. I was in panic mode," said Karen Harvey.

Harvey's daughter was screaming in her bedroom.

"One of the branches had gone through the roof and stopped just short of the girl's bed," said Deputy Chief Tom Ferraro of the Billerica Fire Department.

The family has been displaced and the structural soundness of the home remains unknown.

"A lot of cracks, the cracks are actually splitting, getting wider since I've been here. So right now, again, the building commissioner is condemning the house," said Ferraro.

There are crews working to remove the tree from the home after fears that the tree could roll down the roof and cause more damage.
