Awards recognize 911 dispatchers during marathon bombings

Posted: Updated:
WORCESTER, Mass. (WHDH) - The 5th annual 911 Honors Awards on Wednesday paid special recognition to dispatchers involved in the Boston Marathon bombings and the aftermath in Watertown.

Dispatchers from Boston, Watertown and surrounding communities fielded hundreds upon hundreds of frantic 911 calls in one of the craziest days many of them can remember.

"The phones are ringing off the hook. The dispatchers from Newton there that were helping us out. Usually we have two dispatchers. We ended up having seven dispatchers and every single phone we had was being used for the cause," said one dispatcher at the ceremony.

When the bombs went off, there were other emergencies going on at the same time. On the day of the city lockdown, dispatchers received at least 400 suspicious person calls.

"Everybody knew exactly what they should be doing, although, not to say we weren't nervous about it because we were. I mean, it was scary. But everybody kicked in and I'm glad they did what they had to do."
