Two men charged in Allston beating of homeless man

BOSTON (WHDH) - Two men, including one who was a starter on the Boston College football team, were arraigned on Wednesday in the beating of a homeless man in Allston.

Craig Parsons, 22, of West Newton and Anthony Varrichione, 23, of Medway have been charged with assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Parsons, who was a tight end for Boston College last fall, was also charged with witness intimidation.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, the two men are being charged in a Jan. 26 incident on Allston St. A homeless man was panhandling at around 2:00 a.m. and after a verbal altercation, was punched and kicked by the two suspects. Parsons also allegedly slammed the victim's head into the sidewalk three or four times.

A female passerby who witnessed the attack ran to the victim's aid, shielding the victim until the suspects left and holding his head until paramedics arrived.

"As disturbing as this attack was, it also showed the courage of passersby who refused to look the other way when they saw someone being hurt," District Attorney Daniel Conley said.

The victim was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in critical condition. He is expected to survive but has no memory of the assault.

An investigation revealed that Parsons on four separate occasions directed a person known to him to not cooperate with authorities.

A number of witnesses were interviewed and after testifying before a grand jury, officials were able to charge Parsons and Varrichione.

Parsons' lawyer Michael Doolin said his client will be cleared.

"A very nice young man from a very good family. He came before the court today, plead not guilty. He looks forward to litigating these issues before a jury. I'm confident after a thorough investigation, my client will be exonerated of these charges."

Boston College officials say that Parsons has been suspended from the school and is not allowed near campus until the this case against him moves to court.

Varrichione played for Marist College.
