Lunenburg woman accused of attacking boyfriend with ax

LUNENBURG, Mass. (WHDH) -

A 47-year-old Lunenburg woman was arrested early Wednesday morning for allegedly attacking her boyfriend with an ax.

The Worcester County District Attorney said that Rhonda Ravanis has been charged with attempted murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, vandalizing property and resisting arrest after police found her 53-year-old boyfriend covered in blood with a large gash to the side of his neck.

Ravanis was spitting and kicking at police and had to be forcefully pushed into a cruiser, according to officials.

Neighbor Donna Scott said that Ravanis damaged her home after attacking her boyfriend.

"It sounded like a wall was breaking down. First thing, I jumped out of bed," Scott said. She added that her husband grabbed a baseball bat, but couldn't get outside because the door was jammed.

Neighbors say that boyfriend Robert Volpe was a "nice guy," but had been allegedly attacked by Ravanis before, who most suspected had mental health problems.

"She hit him in the head with a frying pan and he was afraid for his life," said Scott.

Ravanis was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning, but was uncooperative, spitting at her lawyer. A judge has ordered Ravanis to a recovery center to see if he's mentally competent.

A dangerousness hearing will be sought by the District Attorney's office.

Volpe is in stable but critical condition at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester.

The incident remains under investigation.
