Strangers help carry struggling man to marathon finish line

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) -

With less than two-tenths of a mile to go before the Boston Marathon finish line a runner's legs started to give out, but thanks to the kindness of strangers he was able to finish.

“He was maybe 30 feet in front when I first noticed him. He really wasn't moving and his legs were really wobbly,” Dave Meyer said.

If Meyer had passed by the runner medics would have helped him and he wouldn’t have been able to finish the race, but Meyer and others were able to get him going again.

“I took his left arm draped it around my neck. He wasn’t much help at all. I was telling him come on we're going to make it to the finish, come on buddy," Meyer said.

The runner said over the phone that his legs just gave out at the worst time and he's grateful for the runners who stopped their own race to help him.

"We carried him close to finish line and that point he said he wanted to stand up and walk over finish line,” Meyer said.

Spectators said the moment showed what the Boston Marathon is all about.

“We just found it so special that they stopped and did that for another person,” Holly Fulmer said.

Meyer said hundreds of runners and spectators helped cheer him along the course and he wanted to return the favor.

“The moment was probably bigger than the act. Where it happened and when it happened was probably a bigger deal than me helping a guy get to the finish line,” Meyer said.

A representative from Team Hoyt said the runner was part of their team. They said they are glad the other runners helped because that’s what the team is all about.
