N.C. student kicked out of prom for wearing pants

Posted: Updated:
CHERRYVILLE, N.C. (WHDH) - A girl in North Carolina was kicked out of her high school prom after she showed up wearing a pair of red pants, instead of the traditional prom dress.

"In a way it's kind of a slap in the face, you can't get that memory back," said Shafer Rupard.

She and her mother Shawn McQuaige had a great time leading up to her senior prom.

"Almost a tearful event because you know she's getting older. It's just the way she's always been and she wanted to feel comfortable in her own skin," said McQuaige.

To do that, Rupard decided to wear something different instead of a gown: red pants, a black dress shirt, a hat, and a jacket.

She said she wasn't on the dance floor five minutes when her night ended.

"Teacher tapped me on the shoulder. She had a problem with what I was wearing. I thought it was because of the hat or the leather jacket and I was like, 'well, I'll take those off,' and she was like, 'no, it's the pants,'" said Rupard.

She and her mother both said they felt it was ridiculous.

"Well, we want to put out the message to all teenagers that you should be allowed to be yourself," McQuaige said.

They looked in the student code of conduct and learned there was no dress code for the event, and none was indicated on the prom invitation.

They are trying to get an answer about the incident from school officials.
