Sarah Wessmann runs Boston Marathon for FF Mike Kennedy

BOSTON (WHDH) -

Sarah Wessmann was all smiles as she ran past her friends on Boylston Monday afternoon.

She and Firefighter Mike Kennedy had planned to run this year's marathon together.

He was killed last month just a few blocks away in the Back Bay fire.

Mike ran the Boston Marathon back in 2009 with Sarah's initials written in marker on his leg.

His friends say he may not have been able to run this year but he was there in spirit, cheering alongside them.

“Mike Kennedy was supposed to run today. He is running today with all of us,” Sean Doolan said.

“She just stuck to it. Just did it. Did it for him.  Did it for all of us. That’s what it’s all about in Roslindale. That’s what it’s all about in Boston,” Julie Scorzello said.

All of their friends wore t-shirts saying "Dork Strong," which was Kennedy’s nickname.

They're donating the proceeds from those shirts to Lt. Ed Walsh's family, the other firefighter killed that day.
