Photographer talks about taking pictures of bombing suspects

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Bob Leonard was near the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon taking pictures as the runners came by, but it turns out his pictures were much more important.

When the FBI released surveillance pictures show the bombing suspects Leonard realized that he probably had photographed them as they made their way through the crowd on the sidewalk opposite him.

“As I was taking the pictures of the runners I’m probably 50-75 feet from the runners, in the background there they are on the sidewalk. It showed them together, you can see them together, full body in some pictures,” Leonard said.

Leonard’s pictures are clearer than the surveillance footage images and helped lead to the eventual capture of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Leonard said he didn’t like to talk about the role he played in their capture because he wanted the focus to be on the victims, survivors and first responders, but this year he said, he’s happy to be photographing happier moments.

“This is what the marathon is supposed to be,” he said.
