Women's wheelchair champion member of Team MR8

BOSTON (WHDH) -

A special bond links the winner of this year's women's wheelchair race and a little girl injured in last year's bombing.

After receiving her medal, Tatyana McFadden talked about being a part of team MR8, and the bond she has with Martin Richard’s sister Jane, who lost a leg and her brother last year.

“She understood what happened, and that she has a new leg, but she is so, just her energy, she’s so excited about life. That brought me so many emotions and happiness,” McFadden said.

McFadden was defending her championship from last year, but with a team MR8 bib on her chest she said this race was more than that,

“I brought my medals from Sochi and London. She took a couple of selfies and she told me she’s an Olympian and I said ‘you are,’” McFadden said.

Monday was an extra-special day for McFadden, not only did she win but she celebrated her 25th birthday,
