Wellesley College 'scream tunnel' cheers on runners

Posted: Updated:
WELLESLEY, Mass. (WHDH) - Crowds near Wellesley College gathered in what is called the 'scream tunnel' to cheer on runners in the Boston Marathon, and they don't call it that for nothing.

"Look at this. This is how people are able to get through. They are like, 'I made it halfway. All these people are cheering me on,'" Sravanti Tekumalla, a Wellesley College sophomore, said.

Wellesley women took requests to make signs for individual runners. There have been so many requests that they've taken to hanging them from nearby trees.

"I think our house president calls it ‘take back our marathon.' You know, we are still going to come back from what happened. I think the spirit is just there," Erin Altenhos-Long, a Wellesley College sophomore, said.

When the screaming and the signs don't work, students begin crafting "Kiss Me" signs, although they're running out of paper. These marathon supporters say the fun is what is keeping everyone going.

"It is great to follow up a year of things that were not so good with something of happiness and cheering on and making people happy," Lucia Perez, a Wellesley College senior, said.

Wellesley College alum were also invited back to cheer on runners this year. Elisabeth Bassett drove four hours to take part in the cheering.

"You know this is a positive thing. Most people are saying ‘we’re strong and we’re going to come back. I wanted to be a part of this," she said.
