Heavy security welcomed at the marathon

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Popular Newbury Street was shut down on Marathon Monday just one of the security steps to keep the city safe.

Security was heavily present in the air and on the ground surrounding the marathon finish line where private security at checkpoints searched bags one-by-one.

'The security I’ve seen is very good. I’m very happy with the security." Brian Marples one of the many people who had to pass through a checkpoint, said,

In the Back Bay very few people carried backpacks and most just enjoyed the beautiful day.

"I’m not too nervous. I’ve seen all the news coverage. I know that it’s covered very well and I feel about it," Sue Brenneman, a visitor from Minnesota,  said.

Thousands of police officers are on duty including undercover officers in plain clothes with the hope of striking a balance between safety and a family-friendly atmosphere.

“You’re not intimidated by the presence of the police, it’s a family day and it looks like a great day to run and the runners are excited. It looks like Boylston Street is back to what it always was and that’s what we hoped to do today,” Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said.

Along with the officers on the ground there was also aerial coverage, including infrared cameras, from the Massachusetts Sate Police and other organizations.
