Special Easter Sunday mass offers prayer for runners

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Cardinal Sean O'Malley presided over a very special Easter mass Sunday morning as marathon runners gathered to be blessed.

The pews inside the Cathedral of the Holy Cross filled with about 1,800 parishioners, many wearing blue, yellow and bright orange.

"We want to give a very special welcome to our visitors from out of town, especially marathon runners and friends and family accompanying them," O'Malley said.

Easter Sunday doesn't usually fall before Marathon Monday, so the traditional Easter service also included the annual runner's blessing.

"we ask that you bless runners gathered here today in preparation for the Boston marathon."

"last year i was here for the special blessing of runners. I couldn't think of anyplace I'd rather be on Easter Sunday," said Joseph Sullivan, a marathon runner.

It was an honor for the Cardinal As Boston, his adopted home, continues to heal from a tragedy that changed so many lives.

"People tend to be private individuals, but all of a sudden tragedy reminds people who we are and how we depend on each other..and that's a very powerful message," he said.

Days before the 118th annual marathon, Jewish and Muslim runners also offered prayers and reflections in Boston houses of worship.
