Gala, other events kicking off Boston Marathon

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Boston Medical Center hosted a pre-Marathon gala on Saturday in support of Team BMC as part of a special weekend to kick-off the Boston Marathon.

The team running in the Boston Marathon is comprised of doctors, nurses and supporters. Some are veterans of the course and others have never been near Heartbreak Hill.

Some noteworthy people were in attendance were Mayor Marty Walsh, Congressman Stephen Lynch, marathon victims Adrianne Haslet-Davis and Jeff Bauman.

"You're showing us how to be strong, you truly are and I want to  thank you for that. For your strength, for your courage, for your inspiration, for all the things that are important," Walsh said.

Arguably the most recognizable face in the room was actor Kevin Spacey, who reminded the crowd that the marathon survivors were the true stars of the night.

"I was privileged to come to Boston and meet so many people who inspired me and who I believe moved our entire country because of the spirit that you showed and shared with everyone," Spacey said, also managing to pull out his House of Cards character during the speech.

Spacey will be serving as the honorary captain of the BMC marathon team, which has raised more than $1 million for an emegency room that treated several marathon victims.

Runners packed into the Hynes Convention Center on Saturday to pick up their numbers to run in the marathon.

Angela Wells last ran in the race last year. She finished before the bombs went off but said there was no way she was missing this years race.

"We have to tell the people we don't have to be scared of anything, we have to be strong," Wells said.

Bob Lamb has never run the marathon but said as a veteran of the armed  forces he decided this was the year to lace up.

"I saw what those people tried to do to our country and I said it's enough I'll take a small step forward and show them what this country is about," Lamb said.

More than 35,000 runners will tackle the course on Monday.
