HIGHGATE, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police said the pilot of a small plane that crashed next to Interstate 89 in Highgate suffered minor injuries after parachuting out of the plane to safety.

The pilot was identified as Dan Marcotte, who parachuted out of his plane when he encountered problems. Marcotte, an air show performer, ended up stuck in a tree and the fire department rescued him.

People close to Marcotte said the crash happened while he was practicing an aerobatic routine.

One lane of Interstate 89 north in Highgate was reopened after the crash on Friday.

State Police Spokeswoman Stephanie Dasaro said preliminary reports were that the single-seat plane was on fire.

The crash was reported at mile marker 125 just north of Interstate exit 21 in Swanton.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.
