Fire in Cambridge tears through 6-story apartment building

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WHDH) -

Crews are investigating a fire that forced the evacuation of a six-story apartment building in Cambridge.

The fire on Mass Ave broke out early Thursday morning and quickly grew to six alarms.

Officials said it started in the basement and traveled up.

“The basement fire extended into the walls and the ceiling and went up a shaft that services utilities,” Chief Gerald Reardon of the Cambridge Fire Department Said.

The fire spread to all six stories of the 57-unit apartment building. Inside there were no sprinklers. They are not required in the 100-year-old building.

It took about three hours for firefighter to put out the flame.

There are some apartment units in the basement but the fire chief said it looks like it started in a storage unit.

It's estimated more than 100 people safely escaped the flames. No injuries were reported among the residents, but two firefighters suffered injuries. One of them went to the hospital after he fell and hurt his shoulder. Both firefighters are expected to be okay.

The American Red Cross offered assistance to the displaced families.

It's unclear if anybody will be allowed back inside because the units toward the front weren't as damaged as the units in the back.

Gabriella Warner came the scene to make sure her friend had a place to stay.

“But there will be some who will still have to find a place to stay. It’s very awful, very tragic,” Warner said.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause.
