Women alerted of attempted assault near Porter Square

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WHDH) - Women and students living near Cambridge’s Porter Square are being warned about walking alone at night after an attempted sexual assault.

Police say a woman was attacked Tuesday night just after midnight while walking in the area.

“They just said make sure you’re walking around with your friends if it’s late at night. They just said the man was wearing dark clothes and that was it,” Pietra Otera said.

The woman was able to fight off her attacker and get away, but the only description of the man was that he was wearing dark clothing.

“I rarely walk outside in generally, but I usually walk around in groups of people so I’m not that worried. I’m still a little concerned but it’s a safe neighborhood,” Stephanie Wrightington said.

Police notified residents and Lesley University sent an email to students warning them to be safe and walk in groups.

Anybody with information on the incident is asked to contact the Cambridge Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at (617) 349-3370.

The Cambridge Police Department offers a self-defense training course. Anybody who wants information is asked to contact the Community Services Unit at (617) 349-3236.
