Online market emerging for Boston Marathon bibs

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Marathon security will be tight this year, but revelations that people have sold their marathon bibs on Cragslist may make keeping track of racers harder.

Bibs that have reportedly sold for thousands of dollars online are required for all runners, and a vibrant black market has developed for getting hold of the official bibs.

Anthony Johnson, a 30-year-old who wanted to run in his first Boston Marathon, posted an ad on Craigslist looking for a bib, and said he had seen bibs on sale for upwards of $5,000. With more buyers than sellers, bibs are selling at prices from $500 to $4,000.

“There is quite a demand in runners, especially considering this year’s marathon,” Johnson said.

The 36,000 entrants in the 2014 Boston Marathon either met a time standard to qualify or committed to fundraising and will run for a charity. These entrants are not supposed to sell their bibs.

“We totally discourage that, that’s not an appropriate thing to do. I’m not sure why anyone would do that,” said Dave McGillivray, the marathon race director. McGillivray said this was a security concern for the race.
