Boylston Street full of emotion on 1-year anniversary

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) -

Many people visiting Boston today were at Boylston Street, the site of last year’s Boston Marathon bombing.

For some it’s a daily reminder of the events, for others this was a new feeling as they returned to Boston.

Frank Mastrangelo said as a lead member of the BAA Medical Team he has seen the best of the best and the worst of the worst in the 12 months since the explosions.

“There’s a whole positive side to this thing but you’re emotions kind of kick up on the sad side and you can’t help but think about that. It’s great that they mayor and everybody puts on an event like this so we can get together and rehash the old times and focus on the new,” he said.

Tim Fay works on Boylston Street at Crate and Barrel, two doors down from the site of the second explosion.

“It’s a sad and reflective day. I see all the things that they’re doing and I can watch so much of it then I tear up,” Fay said.

Johanna Hantel had just crossed the finish line last year when the first bomb exploded, she suffered multiple injuries.

“I have to be here on the first anniversary of this to show that we are not going to be defeated by what happened a year ago and just to remember and honor the ones that were so severely injured. I had to be here,” she said.

On Marathon Monday this year Boylston Street will be packed with spectators, stores will be open and they will show what it means to be Boston Strong.
