Former trooper running Boston Marathon for Team MR8

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Former State Trooper Sean Murphy is known for the pictures he released of the arrest of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, but he says it’s a different picture that’s close to his heart now.

Murphy will be running this year’s Boston Marathon with Team MR8 in honor of Martin Richard. He said the first time runners met with the family they were each given a picture of 8-year-old Martin who was killed during last year’s bombing.

“It's a picture of martin who ran the BAA children's relay race for three years in a row and he ran it before the terrible incident last year and I know that he's going to be with me when I run,” Murphy said.

Martin was the youngest victim of the bombing, just a few days before the attack he was photographed holding a sign that said ‘No more hurting people, peace.”

“During the race he said to his parents, 'how old do I have to be to run this race?’” Murphy said.

You may remember Sean Murphy because of a very different photo.

The retired trooper spent years as a photographer for the state police.

He took the photos of marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev the night he was captured and released them without permission; it was his shot at the Rolling Stone cover which showed Tsarnaev as a regular college student.

“That was the real face of terror, that wasn't the guy who was on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. I would have done everything exactly the way it happened. I've slept comfortably every night since that day,” Murphy said.

This year will be Murphy’s first marathon, but he said he’s happy to be doing it for a family who lost so much last year.

“Really when I first was told I could run for Team MR8, it was an absolute honor, but after getting to meet the Richard family and seeing them and seeing young Jane who is always smiling, I think it is an honor for anyone to support their cause,” he said.

Three-hundred people applied to run for Team MR8, 100 were chosen. The proceeds they raise will go to the MR8 foundation which supports athletics, community projects and education in Martin’s memory.
