Tree, utility poles fall on moving car

Posted: Updated:
LEICESTER, Mass. (WHDH) - Strong winds in Leicester likely took down a tree and created a dangerous situation for one driver.

When the tree fell it hit power lines and took them down on top of a car that was driving down the road.

“A gust of wind came and I heard a loud crash and the tree came toppling down and the transformers started exploding,” Carl Strom said.

Firefighters were unable to rescue the driver until the utility company arrived on the scene to cut power to the live wires.

“We had to wait until National Grid came in and made sure the power was off,” Leicester Fire Chief Robert Wilson said.

When the driver was rescued he were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

Police officials said they believe wind is to blame, but they are investigating other causes.

“As silly as this may sound, we have taken the stump of the tree as evidence,” Leicester Police Chief James Hurley said.

A second vehicle was also involved, but the three people in that car got away with minor injuries.

A GoFundMe page was set up for the man who was taken to the hospital.
