John Odom thanks specialists at BMC flag raising

BOSTON (WHDH) - Monday afternoon hundreds gathered for a flag raising ceremony at Boston Medical Center where 23 survivors were taken after the Boston Marathon bombing.

One of those survivors was John Odom, who’s heart stopped beating twice during surgeries.

“I stand here today in front of you to thank you personally for saving my life and for all the miracles you performed last April,” Odom said.

Odom, who's from California, was waiting for his daughter at the finish line when he was hit by the blast. At first, both he and his doctor didn't know if he would live.

“When I first met John he was technically dead. He had a big piece of metal that went from the outside of his left leg, to the inside of his left leg, to the inside of his right leg. One piece that went clear across,” Dr. Jeffrey Kalish said.

Odom's wife Karen presented the hospital with a special plaque expressing thanks from their entire family.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to also thank all of you. All the people of Boston, all of you standing here, for your love support and prayers,” she said.

The Odoms will attend the ceremony at Hynes Convention Center Tuesday and said they plan on being at the finish line to cheer on the rehab specialist who helped John at Spaulding Rehabilitation Center.
